Pruning in a City Space

The other day I had a job in the backyard of an apartment in a beautiful neighborhood in San Francisco. I’ve been pruning at this house for years, and shaping the trees to fit in a smaller environment has been a challenge. I worked on the ornamental olive and the lemon this time.

Accentuating the compact nature of the olive and making it a nice addition to the background of the garden.
Improving accessibility to the fruit and reducing the size of the tree to fit the backyard space.

Holistic pruning has been a great method for pruning these trees over the years. The lemons on the tree have better flavor and the olive tree fits the space again without looking artificially shaped.
